A new surge of Latina Cigar Smokers can be found in the classy San Francisco Restaurants to the dazzling New York Cigar Lounges. This phenomenon is not new for Latinas, but they are finally showing the world what it truely means to be a cigar afficionado.

Latinas are showing their independence and ability to maintain the sexyness that comes with cigars. While men see Latina cigar smokers as the seductress to a world of utter bliss.

In reality, the cigar is more than that, it reflects the deep roots of Latinas. Cigar smoking is a ritual of celebration and forming of community.

As a Latina Cigar smoker and historian, I have studied my families cigar smoking history and traditions. I grew up with the smell of seductive and rich walnut smoke of my grandmother's cigar. She has showed me that cigar smoking is a ritual that stems back to when women would lay fermented tabacco leaves on their thighs as a way of luring men. Until recently, Latina women sit in the capacity as cigar rollers, is it a result of the booming cigar industry or the emerging independence of Latinas, this still remains a mystery!

I remember vividly, conversing with my grandmother in the mornings over a hot cup of brewing earth brown coffee and the lingering cigar smoke in my house. She told me that after a long dreadful day of cleaning and cooking, my aunts and all the women in my family, who were over 15 years of age would circle around the patio with their favorite cigars and puff their worries away!!

So as you can see my grandmother like other women in my family have smoked since their youthful days. Believe it or not they are still going strong, except for my great grandmother (Que Dios este con ella).

I believe in preserving the cigar tradition and continuing it for generations to come. Plus, I can contribute to the Latin American economy in a small, but meaningful way. Cigar smoking will not only show my ability to be an elegant women, but also remain true to my cigar culture. Whether I'm at a dazzling cigar lounge or the casual rumba cafe in D.C., I know the true significance of the cigar smoke. What about you?
